Tahukah Anda? Kali Pertama Harimau Malaya Berentap Dengan Syria
Malaysia menang 5–2.

Did You Know? The First Time Harimau Malaya met Syria
Harimau Malaya played against Syria for the first time when the Middle Eastern team made their debut appearance at the 1978 Merdeka Tournament. They joined South Korea, Iraq, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand in the event.
Instead of having group-based stages, the 1978 edition had all teams play a round-robin tournament, where the top two teams would meet in the final.
Malaysia met Syria in their sixth match, after four wins and one loss. A soggy pitch awaited both teams after a day of rain. Syria had already suffered a casualty due to the slippery grass, which led to their youngest player being admitted into hospital. However, the weather did not dampen the teams’ spirit nor stop it from being a thrilling match.
Professional player Yip Chee Keong scored the first goal for Harimau Malaya in the 11th minute. However, nine minutes before half-time, Chee Keong and Anwar Abdel Kader caught themselves in a scuffle until they were both sent off.
Earlier in the 28th minute, Haisan Borakjikli from Syria became the first player of the tournament to be sent off the pitch after arguing with the Thai referee, Watana, about an offside call. As his anger only increased after Watana flashed him the yellow card, Borakjikli was shown the red card.
All three players were suspended for one match after a decision made by the tournament’s disciplinary committee.
Malaysia’s second and third goals were scored by Abdah Alif and Rameli Junit in the same 18th minute. Just before half-time, Nik Fauzi landed their fourth goal after a pass from Jamal Nasir. In the second half, James Wong entered the pitch to replace Bakri Ibni. In the 55th minute, Wong’s pass to Abdah Alif led him to scoring his second goal. Malaysia won 5–2.
