Lompatan Gladys Chai setinggi 1.74m yang dilakukan di Sukan SEAP Singapura 1973 mencatat rekod kebangsaan untuk acara lompat tinggi wanita.

Gladys membuat lompatan itu pada 4 September sewaktu acara pentathlon (sekarang heptathlon) yang beliau memenangi pingat emas. 

Beliau juga memenangi pingat emas dalam acara lompat tinggi individu walaupun lompatannya hanya sekadar ketinggian 1.65m.

Kecemerlangannya pada ketika itu mendapat pengiktirafan apabila beliau dinobatkan sebagai Olahragawati Kebangsaan 1973. 

Setahun sebelum itu, atlet yang lahir pada 22 Feb 1953 dan berasal dari Serian, Sarawak, layak ke Sukan Olimpik Munich. Malangnya, beliau tidak dapat menghabiskan saingan kerana mengalami kecederaan. Gladys kemudiannya bertanding di Sukan Asia Teheran pada tahun 1974 di mana beliau memenangi pingat perak. 

Berbalik kepada rekod kebangsaannya yang dicipta pada tahun 1973, ia bertahan selama 14 tahun 1 bulan 25 hari. Rekod tersebut dipecah oleh seorang atlet muda berumur 22 tahun, Nor Aishah Ismail di Kejohanan Terbuka All Comers pada 29 Oktober 1987 dengan lompatan 1.75m.

How long did Gladys Chai hold the national high jump record?

Gladys Chai’s 1.74m leap at the 1973 Singapore SEAP Games became a national record in Women’s High Jump.

Gladys made the jump on September 4 during the pentathlon (now a heptathlon) event, which she won the gold medal in. She also won the gold medal in the individual high jump event, reaching 1.65m.

Her sporting excellence then was recognised as she was crowned the 1973 National Sportswoman of the Year.

A year before, the athlete born on February 22, 1953 in Serian, Sarawak, qualified for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete her event due to an injury. Gladys then went on to compete at the 1974 Tehran Asian Games where she brought home a silver medal.

Back to her national record created in 1973, it was undefeated for a total of 14 years, one month, and 25 days. The national record was broken by 22 year old Nor Aishah Ismail at the All Comers Open Championship on October 29, 1987 with a 1.75 high jump.
