Selamat Hari Lahir, Wong Kam Fook

Legasi Lagenda mengucapkan selamat hari kelahiran kepada Olimpian Malaysia, Wong Kam Fook! Legenda bola sepak negara yang berasal dari Ipoh, Perak genap 74 tahun hari ini.

Kam Fook mula bermain sebagai penjaga gol sejak zaman persekolahan sebelum menyertai Perak FA pada tahun 1968. Ketika bermain pada peringkat negeri, Kam Fook sedar bahawa persada bola sepak Malaysia lebih sengit dan kompetitif. Penuh dengan keazaman untuk menjadi penjaga gol yang terbaik, Kam Fook berdedikasi untuk meningkatkan prestasi beliau dan mencapai matlamat tersebut.

Bersama pasukan Perak, Kam Fook menjuarai Piala Malaysia 1970 setelah mengalahkan Kelantan 2–0 pada perlawanan akhir. Mereka hampir menjadi juara sekali lagi pada tahun seterusnya namun tewas kepada Selangor 3–1 pada perlawanan akhir.

Kam Fook menyertai pasukan kebangsaan Malaysia pada 1970 dan menjadi penjaga gol utama untuk pelbagai kejohanan antarabangsa termasuk Pestabola Merdeka, Sukan Asia, Sukan SEAP, Piala Kemerdekaan Vietnam Selatan dan Kelayakan Asia Olimpik Munich 1972. Malaysia berjaya menjuarai Kelayakan Olimpik Munich tanpa sebarang gol daripada pasukan lawan.

Itu sememangnya salah satu detik yang membanggakan bagi Kam Fook. Di Munich, beliau bermain dalam ketiga-tiga perlawanan peringkat kumpulan menentang Jerman Barat, Amerika Syarikat dan Maghribi. Malangnya, Kam Fook tercedera semasa perlawanan menentang Maghribi dan digantikan oleh Lim Fung Kee pada minit ke-27.

Penampilan terakhir Kam Fook bersama Malaysia adalah di Pestabola Merdeka 1972 sebelum beliau berhijrah ke Hong Kong untuk memulakan karier sebagai pemain bola sepak professional. Beliau telah bermain bersama pasukan-pasukan seperti Caroline Hills, South China, Hong Kong Rangers dan Seiko.

Semoga segala pencapaian dan pengorbanan beliau menjadi inspirasi bagi generasi akan datang.

Legasi Lagenda wishes a happy birthday to national Olympian, Wong Kam Fook! The football legend who hails from Ipoh, Perak turns 74 today.

Kam Fook started playing as goalkeeper in his schooling days before joining Perak FA in 1968. As he started playing on a state level, he found the Malaysian football scene much more fierce and competitive. Determined to be his best for the team, he was dedicated to improving himself and achieving that goal.

With Perak, Kam Fook won the 1970 Malaysia Cup after defeating Kelantan 2–0 in the final match. They were close to repeating the same victory in 1971 but lost to Selangor 3-1 in the final.

Kam Fook joined the Malaysian national team in 1970 and became Malaysia’s primary goalkeeper for numerous international tournaments including the Merdeka Tournament, the Asian Games, the SEAP Games, the South Vietnam Independence Cup and the 1972 Munich Olympic Asian Qualifiers. Malaysia topped the group of the Munich Olympic Qualifiers with no goals from the opposing teams.

Qualifying for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games was one of Kam Fook’s proudest moments. He went on to play all three matches in the group stage against West Germany, United States and Morocco. Unfortunately, Kam Fook was injured during their match against Morocco and was substituted by Lim Fung Kee in the 27th minute.

Kam Fook’s final appearance with Malaysia was at the 1972 Merdeka Tournament before he moved to Hong Kong to start his career as a professional player. He played for teams such as Caroline Hills, South China, Hong Kong Rangers and Seiko.

We hope that all of his achievements and sacrifices will be an inspiration for generations to come.
