Meraikan 100 Tahun Piala Malaysia – Piala Malaysia 1968 & 1969
Bila agaknya Pulau Pinang menjulang Piala Malaysia lagi? Nantikan kisah seterusnya…

Celebrating 100 Years of the Malaysia Cup – Malaysia Cup 1968 & 1969
Selangor and Penang met again at the 1968 Malaysia Cup final, five years after their last encounter at the 1963 Malaya Cup final. In 1967, the Malaya Cup was retired and replaced by the Malaysia Cup. Perak emerged as champions of the new Cup after defeating Singapore 2–1 in the final.
Selangor assured their dominance by overpowering Penang 8–1, a score that was repeated since they defeated Singapore back in the 1927 final match.
In the first half, Selangor were leading 3–0 after goals by Wong Choon Wah (8’, 39’) and N. Thanabalan (18’). Selangor fans were roaring as the second half began. In the 57th minute, Wong Fook Yoong nonchalantly dribbled the ball towards Thanabalan, who then drove it home. Thanabalan continued to score more goals in the 60th and 65th minutes. Another pass from Fook Yoong in the 76th minute led to Zulkifli Norbit securing Selangor’s seventh goal.
Penang, fighting hard, finally managed to score their singular goal of the match through Syed Ahmad a few minutes later. However, Selangor retaliated by securing their eighth and final goal two minutes before time was called. Ghani Minhat slanted a pass to Fook Yoong, who was ready with his winning shot past goalkeeper Hassanuddin Harun. Thanabalan’s four goal feast remains as a record for most goals scored in a Malaysia Cup final match.
After another year of terrific performances by Selangor and Penang, both teams reunited at the 1969 Malaysia Cup final. Penang was desperate for a win while Selangor surely did not want to let go of the Cup. Both teams fought hard to keep the other from scoring but Selangor once again walked away with a win, even though the match was held at City Stadium. In the 40th minute, Wong Choon Wah surprised the crowd with a header to produce Selangor’s sole but winning goal.
When will Penang win their first Malaysia Cup? Stay tuned.
