Kemenangan 200 Pingat di Sukan SEA KL 1989
Pada Sukan SEA KL 1989, Malaysia berjaya merangkul sebanyak 67 pingat emas, 58 perak dan 75 gangsa. Ia merupakan pungutan terbanyak bagi pasukan negara pada ketika itu dan meletakkan Malaysia pada tangga kedua di bawah Indonesia.
Dalam acara berpasukan, Malaysia memenangi pingat emas menerusi bola sepak, pasukan badminton lelaki, bola keranjang lelaki dan bola keranjang wanita. Bagi acara individu, Malaysia memperoleh kemenangan terbesar dalam sukan olahraga yang menyumbang sebanyak 12 emas, 12 perak dan 13 gangsa.
Tentunya Sukan SEA edisi 1989 tidak dapat dilupakan oleh bintang trek dan padang Malaysia. Setelah membawa pulang 8 pingat emas dua edisi berturut-turut, Malaysia mengidamkan jumlah pingat dua digit. Untuk membantu mencapai matlamat tersebut, Majlis Sukan Negara menghantar seramai 26 atlet untuk menjalani latihan di Perth, Australia Barat sebelum Sukan SEA bermula.
“Ratu Heptatlon” Zaiton Othman meraih pingat emas ketiga beliau dalam acara heptatlon. Sebelum itu, beliau telah menjuarai acara tersebut pada 1981 dan 1983. Namun, beliau tidak mengambil bahagian dalam dua edisi Sukan SEA yang berikutnya dan kembali sekali lagi pada tahun 1989 untuk kali terakhir. Pada usia 30 tahun, Zaiton mengumumkan persaraan beliau sebagai atlet sebelum menuju ke Amerika Syarikat untuk melanjutkan pelajaran.
Nama yang sedang meningkat naik, Nasir Sadri menggondol pingat emas dalam acara dekatlon lelaki dan dinobatkan “Iron Man” baharu Malaysia selepas penampilan sulung beliau, gelaran yang sebelum ini diberikan kepada Hanafiah Nasir.
Walaupun beliau gugup seolah-olah mengambil tempat Hanafiah dalam acara dekatlon, Nasir memanggil Hanafiah sebagai rakan baik dan berterima kasih atas segala nasihat dan dorongan yang diberikan. Adik beliau pula, Zakri Sadri memenangi pingat emas dalam acara lompat kijang dan memecahkan rekod kejohanan.
Rekod kejohanan Sukan SEA juga dipecahkan oleh pemenang-pemenang pingat emas Samson Vellabouy (800m), S. Kesavan (lompat tinggi) dan Arjan Singh (lontar peluru). Norsham Yoon, yang menjuarai acara rejam lembing wanita, memecahkan rekod kebangsaan. Lee Chiew Har yang memenangi pingat emas dalam acara lontar peluru wanita dengan rekod lontarannya masih kekal hingga sekarang.
Kami tidak lupa olahragawan dan olahragawati yang tidak dapat bertanding di Sukan SEA 1989, termasuk pelari Josephine Mary yang telah bersedia untuk acara 400m dan 800m. Malangya, beliau dijangkiti demam campak. Rabuan Pit juga terpaksa mengundur diri akibat kecederaan kaki sewaktu latihan.
Semoga kejayaan atlet kita di masa lalu menjadi inspirasi kepada generasi sekarang untung melakar kejayaan yang cemerlang.

200 medal victory at the 1989 KL SEA Games
Malaysia brought home a total of 67 gold, 58 silver, and 75 bronze medals at the 1989 KL SEA Games. It was the country’s highest victory yet, placing them second below Indonesia.
In team sports, Malaysia won the gold medal in football, men’s badminton team, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. For individual events, Malaysia earned its biggest victory in athletics with a total of 12 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
It was a memorable Games for Malaysian track and field stars. After bringing home eight gold medals two editions in a row, Malaysia yearned for double digits. As such, the National Sport Council sent 26 athletes to undergo training in Perth, Western Australia before the Games.
“Heptathlon Queen” Zaiton Othman claimed her third gold medal in Heptathlon after winning twice before in 1981 and 1983. She sat out the next two Games and came back once more in 1989. At 30 years old, It was then where she officially announced her retirement in athletics before heading to the United States of America to further her studies.
Rising star Nasir Sadri bagged the gold medal in men’s decathlon and was declared the new “Iron Man” – a title previously given to Hanafiah Nasir – as he made his debut. While he was nervous as though he was taking Hanafiah Nasir’s spot in the event, he called Hanafiah his good friend and was grateful for his advice and encouragement. Meanwhile, Nasir’s brother Zakri Sadri won the gold in triple jump and broke the Games’ record.
More championship records were broken by gold medalists Samson Vellabouy (Men’s 800m), S. Kesavan (High Jump) and Arjan Singh (Shot Put). Norsham Yoon, who won gold in Women’s Javelin Throw smashed the national record. Additionally, Lee Chiew Har’s gold medal in Women’s Shot Put still stands as the national record today.
Honourable mentions go out to the national athletics who were not able to compete at the 1989 SEA Games, including middle distance runner Josephine Mary, who had set her eyes on the 400m and 800m events. Unfortunately, she contracted measles just before the Games. Rabuan Pit also had to pull out from his events due to a leg injury sustained during training.
