25 Pingat Emas di Sukan SEA 1977

Selepas Sukan SEAP 1975, Persekutuan Sukan SEAP membuat keputusan untuk menjemput negara-negara jiran Brunei, Indonesia dan Filipina untuk bertanding dan menyingkirkan “Peninsula” daripada nama mereka. Ia adalah buah fikiran negara Indonesia dan cadangan tersebut berjaya diserapkan untuk edisi ke-9.

Malaysia merupakan tuan rumah Sukan SEA 1977 yang diadakan pada 19-26 November. Pembawa obor kejohanan di majlis pembukaan adalah dua Olimpian negara, iaitu olahragawati pecut Junaidah Aman dan pemain bola sepak Wong Choon Wah. 

Semasa beliau memberi ucapan pembukaaan, pengerusi jawatankuasa Sukan SEA 1977, Datuk Seri Hamzah Abu Samah menyatakan “biarlah kemenangan diukur bukan dengan jumlah pingat yang dimenangi, tetapi dengan kenangan riang dan persahabatan yang dipupuk.” Beliau menekankan kepentingan jalin hubungan bersama negara-negara yang baru dijemput untuk mengambil bahagian.

Malaysia memenangi sejumlah 25 pingat emas, meletakkan mereka di tempat ke-4 secara keseluruhan. Untuk sukan berpasukan, Malaysia menjuarai kejohanan bola sepak setelah menewaskan Thailand 2-0 pada perlawanan akhir, hasil jaringan gol daripada Bakri Ibni dan Mokhtar Dahari. Turut muncul juara ialah pasukan sepak takraw, hoki, dan bola keranjang wanita. 

Kebanyakan pingat emas dipungut oleh atlet olahraga Malaysia seperti Marina Chin yang mengukuhkan kedudukan beliau sebagai ratu trek setelah menjuarai acara 100m and 200m lari berpagar serta mencipta rekod baharu untuk kedua-dua acara. Kemenangan lain termasuk atlet baharu Sukhinder Singh, Ishtiaq Mubarak, Simit Bolkiah, 4x400m lari berganti-ganti, Vellasamy Subramaniam, Khoo Chong Beng, Baljit Singh Sidhu, Ballang Lasung, Lau Kiew Ee dan Kalaimaney Sengany. 

Untuk lumba basikal pula, dua pingat emas dimenangi dalam acara lebuh raya 186km bagi kategori berpasukan dan individu melalui Ali Hassan. Malaysia juga memungut tiga pingat emas dalam sukan menembak melalui pasukan tembakan “skeet”, pasukan tembakan “trap” dan Stanley Lim. Selain itu, Liew Mei Ling dan Goh Wing Mai mengutip dua pingat emas dalam acara judo. 

Sylvia Ng memberikan Malaysia satu-satunya pingat emas dalam badminton dengan menjuarai acara perseorangan wanita, manakala kemenangan tunggal untuk angkat berat dicapai oleh William Yeo.

25 Golds at the 1977 SEA Games

After the 1975 edition, the SEAP Games Federation decided to invite neighbouring nations Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines into the fold and discard ‘Peninsula’ from the title. The idea was proposed by Indonesia and they succeeded in time for the 9th edition. 

Malaysia was host nation for the 1977 SEA Games, which was held from November 19 – 26. At the opening ceremony, the torch bearers were two Olympians, sprinter Junaidah Aman and footballer Wong Choon Wah. 

During his speech, Datuk Seri Hamzah Abu Samah, chairman of the Games’ committee, stated “let the final victory be measured not by the number of medals won but the happy memories and true friendship cultivated,” stressing the importance of forging relationships with the new countries participating.

Malaysia won a total of 25 gold medals, placing them 4th in the final rankings. In team sports, the Malaysian football team won gold after defeating Thailand 2–0 in the finals, with goals by Bakri Ibni and Mokhtar Dahari. Also emerging victorious were sepak takraw, hockey and the women’s basketball team.

With Malaysian athletes racking up most gold medals, Marina Chin cemented herself as a hurdles champion after winning the 100m and 200m events in record time. The other wins were by newcomer Sukhinder Singh, Ishtiaq Mubarak, Simit Bolkiah, 4x400m relay team, Vellasamy Subramaniam, Khoo Chong Beng, Baljit Singh Sidhu, Ballang Lasung, Lau Kiew Ee, and Kalaimaney Sengany. 

Two gold medals were won in the 186km cycling events through a solo effort by Ali Hassan and in the team category. Meanwhile, Malaysia scored 3 wins in shooting through the skeet shooting team, the trap shooting team, and Stanley Lim. Two more medals were won in judo through Liew Mei Ling and Goh Wing Wai. 

Sylvia Ng gave Malaysia the only gold in badminton after winning women’s singles, while a sole win for weightlifting was recorded by William Yeo.
