Tahukah anda bila sukan badminton diperkenalkan di temasya Sukan Olimpik?
Jawapannya adalah pada tahun 1972 di Sukan Olimpik Munich. Walau bagaimanapun, ia tidak dipertandingkan untuk perebutan pingat. Ia hanya dilangsungkan sebagai sukan demonstrasi untuk mempromosikan sukan tersebut.
Bagi acara perseorangan lelaki, Malaysia menghantar Tan Aik Mong yang tewas kepada Wolfgang Bochow dari Jerman Barat (10-15, 5-15) pada pusingan pertama. Tan Aik Mong juga bermain dalam acara beregu lelaki bersama Bandid Jaiyen dari Thailand. Mereka tewas dalam perlawanan pertama kepada Ade Chandra dan Christian Hadinata dari Indonesia.
Ng Boon Bee dan Punch Gunalan, yang juga mewakili Malaysia dalam acara beregu lelaki, mara ke pusingan akhir di mana mereka bertemu Chandra dan Hadinata. Perlawanan tamat dengan kemenangan kepada pemain-pemain Indonesia (15-4, 2-15, 11-15), manakala Malaysia secara simboliknya membawa pulang pingat perak.
Badminton terpaksa menunggu selama 16 tahun untuk dimainkan di Sukan Olimpik sekali lagi sebagai sukan demonstrasi. Ia dipertandingkan secara rasmi pada edisi berikutnya iaitu Sukan Olimpik Barcelona 1992. Razif dan Jalani Sidek memenangi pingat gangsa pertama Malaysia dalam sukan badminton selepas tewas kepada pasangan Korea Selatan, Kim Moon-soo dan Park Joo-bong (11-15, 13-15) pada perlawanan separuh akhir. Rashid Sidek, adik mereka, berjaya mara ke suku akhir perseorangan lelaki sebelum ditewaskan oleh Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen dari Denmark (2-15, 8-15).
Malaysia telah meraih sejumlah 6 pingat perak dan 3 pingat gangsa di Sukan Olimpik.

Do you know when badminton was introduced at the Olympic Games?
It was in 1972 at the Munich Olympic Games. However, it was not contested for an official medal. When badminton was first played at the Olympics, it was shown as a demonstration sport as a way to promote the sport.
For Men’s Singles, Malaysia sent Tan Aik Mong who lost to Wolfgang Bochow from West Germany (10-15, 5-15) in the first round. Tan Aik Mong also played in Men’s Doubles alongside Bandid Jaiyen from Thailand, losing their first match to Ade Chandra and Christian Hadinata from Indonesia.
Ng Boon Bee and Punch Gunalan represented Malaysia in Men’s Doubles as well, advancing to the final round where they met Chandra and Hadinata. The match ended with the Indonesian duo victorious (15-4, 2-15, 11-15) and Malaysia symbolically bringing home a silver medal.
Badminton was played as an exhibition sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, 16 years after its first event. It was officially competed at the next edition, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Razif and Jalani Sidek won Malaysia’s first bronze medal in badminton after losing to South Korean pair Kim Moon-soo and Park Joo-bong (11-15, 13-15) in the semi-finals. Rashid Sidek, their brother, made it to the quarterfinals of Men’s Singles before he was defeated by Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen from Denmark (2-15, 8-15).
Malaysia has claimed a total of 6 silver medals and 3 bronze medals at the Olympic Games.
