Adik Harimau Best Melawan Abang

George Best’s Juniors Take on Harimau Malaya

On August 2, 1983, the national team faced off against the development squad Harimau Malaysia in a friendly exhibition match at Merdeka Stadium. The match served as preparation for both sides; the senior squad was training for the Merdeka Tournament, while Malaysia’s second team was gearing up to compete at Bangladesh’s Gold Cup.

Harimau Malaysia, who trained alongside renowned Northern Irish player George Best for days prior to the match, pulled off a surprise 4–3 victory over the national team, which was under coach Frank Lord.

The magical touch and aura of the Manchester United legend inspired the young players to show their fighting spirit, as not to give space to their more experienced opponents. The philosophy instilled by Best was to play “simple football” rather than overcomplicating the game. Best, then 37 years old, also provided guidance to the national squad on match day.

Despite being retired, Best still demonstrated exceptional skill and delivered precise passes to his teammates. Although his stamina visibly waned in the second half, he remained capable of controlling the match’s tempo and organising attacks. Best certainly did not disappoint fans who came to the stadium to see him in action.

Harimau Malaysia led 2–1 at halftime. The opening goal stemmed from a move by Best, who sped through Wong Hung Nung and D. Devendran before delivering a cross that was finished off by Nasir Yusof. Their second goal came from Karim Pin, who made a run into the penalty area to latch onto a pass from Lahad Daduk. The senior team then retaliated with a header by Ho Hon Seong.

In the second half, Best scored from a penalty kick, while Nasir Yusof found the net again to widen the lead to 4–1. However, the team led by Best lost some focus towards the end of the match. The national team seized the opportunity to score two goals in the final ten minutes of the match through Serbegeth Singh and C. Nadarajah.
