Sentuhan ‘Midas’ Tunku Abdul Rahman Menarik Pasukan Hebat

Mereka bukanlah calang-calang pasukan.

India  –
Menduduki tempat ke-4 Sukan Olimpik Melbourne 1956

Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Midas Touch Attracts the Best Teams

Today, we share memorabilia from the 1959 Merdeka Tournament that we have saved in #ArkibLegasiLagnda.

The Merdeka Tournament has been synonymous with our country’s freedom and the Father of Independence, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

In his time, Tunku Abdul Rahman has proven that football has a large supportive following. The Merdeka Stadium attracted fans from all over to fill the space every time a match was held. Harimau Malaya managed to prove that a young nation can not only compete in international matches, but also defeat more experienced teams.

At the 3rd edition of the Merdeka Tournament, Tunku Abdul Rahman together with FAM invited three more countries to compete for the first time – India, South Korea and Japan. They were not just any teams:

India – Finished 4th at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games
Defeated Australia 4 – 2 in the quarterfinals
Lost 1 – 4 to Yugoslavia (semifinals) and 0 – 3 to Bulgaria (bronze medal match)

South Korea – Inaugural AFC Asian Cup champions in 1956

Japan – Played at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, losing to Australia 0 – 2 in the first round

The 1957 Merdeka Tournament champions, Hong Kong, along with Singapore and South Vietnam also participated in the event.

What happened at the 1959 Merdeka Tournament? Can the Harimau Malaya compete with these formidable teams and defend their championship?

Stay tuned.
