Legasi Lagenda wishes to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the late legendary badminton player, Dato’ Ng Boon Bee, who passed away yesterday afternoon on August 3, 2022.
From a young age, Dato’ Ng Boon Bee excelled in many sports and not only badminton.
From 1958 to 1960, he played with the Malayan national football team. Malaya won the Merdeka Tournament three years consecutively during that time (they were joined champions with South Korea in 1960).
Ng Boon Bee then focused on sharpening his talent on the badminton court. He was a force as a doubles player. With his partner Tan Yee Khan, they emerged as champions at their first international tournament, the 1965 All-England Championships. They were in the winning team at the 1967 Thomas Cup and were victorious at the Asian Games (1962, 1966).
In the 1970’s, Ng Boon Bee formed another formidable partnership with Punch Gunalan and continued his successful career. Their highlights include winning gold at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games (1970). Ng Boon Bee and Punch Gunalan also made it to the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, where badminton was introduced as a demonstration sport and they brought home the silver medal.
We hope that Ng Boon Bee’s sacrifices and contributions to the Malaysian sport will never be forgotten. His achievements in different avenues should be an inspiration for generations to come.
