Piala Malaysia 1974

On July 13, 1974, Penang was back at the Malaysia Cup final ready to take the trophy home. Their last time at the finals was in 1969, where they lost to Selangor 0–1. Perak was the popular vote to win as they were champions of the 1970 edition and runners-up in 1971 and 1972.

Leading up to the finals, Penang defeated Singapore 6–4 (through aggregate) while Perak shattered Selangor’s chances 3–2.

After a slow start in the first half, Shaharuddin Abdulllah scored Penang’s first goal in the 65th minute. With confidence on their side, Mohamad Bakar secured Penang’s second goal in the 71st minute. Syed Ahmad, who used to play for Penang before joining Perak,  was determined to ensure that his team did not go home fruitless. Seven minutes before the final whistle blew, he scored Perak’s only goal after the ball bounced off the goalpost from a header.

City Stadium roared as Penang was declared champions of the 1974 Malaysia Cup and the team raised the trophy for the first time (they last won the Malaya Cup in 1958). FAP also presented the Penang team with a gold medal in the shape of the island to commemorate their win.
