Thomas Cup 1952 – Malaya’s Mission to Defend the Championship
After defeating Denmark 8 – 1 and winning the inaugural Thomas Cup in 1949, the Malaya Badminton Association made thorough preparations to defend the Cup on home soil. The Singapore Badminton Association was given the honour of hosting the match.
The Thomas Cup finals were held in Singapore on May 31 and June 1, 1952. Malaya awaited the inter-zone champions who would be their opponent. The inter-zone champion had been decided two weeks prior to the finals. India met with European champions Denmark and the winner of that match would face the United States in the inter-zone final, which was also held in Singapore.
14 players were called up for a trial to select Malaya’s team. Two test matches were held: at Happy World Stadium, Singapore (February 24 & 25) and the Selangor Badminton Hall in Kampong Attap (May 3 & 4). The players also underwent intensive training for two months in Singapore before six players were announced to defend the Thomas Cup.
Under the supervision of coach Tan Boon Piew, the 14 players were:
Johor: Wong Peng Soon, Ong Poh Lim, Ismail Marjan, Cheong Hock Leng
Selangor: Yeoh Teck Chye, Chan Kon Leong, Abdullah Piruz, Lim Kee Fong
Perak: Tan Jin Eong, Teoh Seng Khoon
Pulau Pinang: Ooi Teik Hock, Law Teik Hock, Lee Hoo Chye
Singapore: Loong Pan Yap
