Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! – Pestabola Merdeka 1976

Sukar melupakan detik sebegitu.”

“The 1976 Merdeka Tournament was the most memorable one for me. After the disappointment that was the 1975 final, I got back up to lead the complete team that we had.
The late Mokhtar Dahari was at the peak of his performance; he scored two goals in the final defeating Japan. Malaysia recorded 19 goals at the group stage and subsequently won the tournament without any defeat. It was truly a special edition for me.
Apart from making up for our failure from the previous year and the pre-Olympics, the 1976 tournament was a momentous feat for Mokhtar as the nation’s top striker.
His two goals in two minutes in the final at Merdeka Stadium led us to defeat Japan 2–0. Japan had Kunishige Kamamoto, who was the top scorer of the 1968 Olympic Games, in addition to Yasuhiko Okudera who went on to play in the Bundesliga. My free kick acted as bait for Mokhtar to lunge his body and send in a header to complete our second goal. It is hard to forget a moment like that.”
