Malaysia layak ke Kejohanan Hoki Piala Dunia Belia 1979
Buat julung kalinya, pasukan hoki belia kebangsaan berjaya layak ke Piala Dunia yang diadakan pada tahun 1979 di Versailles, Perancis.
Ini berikutan kejayaan yang dikecapi sebagai naib juara Kelayakan Hoki Piala Dunia Belia – Kawasan Asia Dan Oceania 1977. Malaysia tewas 0-2 kepada Pakistan di final pada 22 Mei 1977 di Stadium Merdeka. Gol-gol Pakistan dijaringkan oleh Hanif Khan (26) dan Ehtesham Ali (64).
India menundukkan Singapura 2-0 dalam perlawanan penentuan tempat ketiga.
Sebanyak sepuluh pasukan bertanding dalam kejohanan kelayakan di mana mereka dipecahkan kepada dua kumpulan. Empat pasukan teratas akan layak ke Perancis. Kumpulan A terdiri daripada India, Singapura, Hong Kong, Bangladesh dan Sri Lanka. Manakala pasukan Malaysia berada di Kumpulan B bersama Pakistan, Indonesia, Macau dan Thailand. New Zealand menarik diri pada saat-saat akhir pertandingan dengan alasan masalah kewangan. Sebelum itu pasukan Jepun mengundur diri kerana tarikh kejohanan tidak bersesuaian untuk mereka.
Perjalanan pasukan kebangsaan dalam kejohanan tersebut adalah seperti berikut:
Mei 14: Malaysia 11 – 0 Macau
Mei 15: Malaysia 3 – 0 Thailand
Mei 17: Malaysia 9 – 0 Indonesia
Mei 18: Malaysia 0 – 0 Pakistan
Mei 20: Malaysia 2 – 1 India (separuh akhir)
16 pemain (dalam kurungan adalah umur setiap pemain) yang membawa pasukan negara ke Piala Dunia 1979, kejohanan pertama bagi ketegori belia, ialah:

Malaysia Qualifies for the 1979 Hockey Junior World Cup
For the first time, the national junior hockey team successfully qualified for the 1979 World Cup that was going to be held in Versailles, France.
This comes after their success for placing as runner-up at the 1977 Hockey Junior World Cup Qualifiers – Asia & Oceania. Malaysia lost 0 – 2 to Pakistan in the final on May 22, 1977, which was held at Merdeka Stadium. Pakistan’s goals were scored by Hanif Khan (26’) and Ehtesham Ali (64’).
Meanwhile, India defeated Singapore 2 – 0 in the third-place playoff.
10 teams competed in the qualifying tournament, where they were divided into two groups. The top four teams qualified for France. Group A consisted of India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Malaysia was in Group B along with Pakistan, Indonesia, Macau and Thailand. New Zealand withdrew in the final moments due to financial restraints. Japan also withdrew from competition as it was held on an unsuitable date for them.
Malaysia’s journey to the final was as follows:
May 14: Malaysia 11 – 0 Macau
May 15: Malaysia 3 – 0 Thailand
May 17: Malaysia 9 – 0 Indonesia
May 18: Malaysia 0 – 0 Pakistan
May 20: Malaysia 2 – 1 India (semi-final)
