Indonesia pula berjaya menjaringkan satu gol lima minit sebelum tamat perlawanan.
Pada perlawanan kedua, Malaysia mengejutkan pasukan pilihan ramai Korea Selatan dengan kemenangan agak besar 3-0. Malaysia mempamerkan persembahan yang baik dan kecemerlangan penjaga gol R. Arumugam menambah keyakinan pasukan.
James Wong berjaya mejaringkan gol pertama 7 minit dalam perlawanan sebelum tandukan Khalid Ali mencecah jaring pada minit ke-32. Dalam satu serangan balas yang pantas setelah kubu Malaysia ditekan, pasukan negara berjaya menambah jaringan melalui gol sendiri pemain Korea Selatan Choi Jung Duck sebelum wisel penamat dibunyikan.
Malaysia meneruskan momentum tanpa kalah setelah menewaskan Brunei 3-1.

In their opening match of the Asia Group Two Pre-Olympic Games, Malaysia gave a mighty performance by defeating Indonesia 6-1. At half time, Malaysia was leading 3-0 after two goals from Khalid Ali and one from Hassan Sani.
Both of them continued their scoring prowess with Hassan Sani’s goals in the 48th and 69th minutes before Khalid Ali brought it home with the final goal in the 80th minute. These two were definitely the stars of the match. Meanwhile, Indonesia managed to land a goal five minutes from the end.
For their second match, Malaysia met with hopeful favourites, South Korea and delivered a 3–0 upset. Malaysia showed great technique to survive as goalkeeper R. Arumugam’s many saves gave his teammates confidence.
James Wong scored the first goal 7 minutes into the match before Khalid Ali scored with a header in the 32nd minute. In a swift counter-attack after the Malaysian defence was under pressure, the national team managed to add one more as South Korea’s Choi Jung Duck sent in an own goal before the final whistle blew.
Unbeaten, Malaysia continued their streak with a 3–1 over Brunei. Zulkifli Hamzah scored their first goal in the 13th minute to equalise Brunei’s successful attempt three minutes earlier. After a draw for the majority of the match, Malaysia managed to secure two goals through James Wong in the 71st and 87th minutes.
In their next match, Japan surprised everyone by scoring the first goal 8 minutes in. Would this end Malaysia’s undefeated record? It seemed possible until captain Soh Chin Ann scored the equaliser with 15 minutes to spare.
Malaysia remained on track to advance to the final round. Their last match against the Philippines was an easy victory after defeating them 8-0. Goals were scored by Hassan Sani (2), Khalid Ali (2), Ramli Junit (2), Jamal Nasir, and Abdah Alif.
The goal-filled triumph confirmed Malaysia’s place in the final match, where they would face South Korea once again for a spot at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
Stay tuned for our next post to see how they fared.
